GetOutAndLearn attributes much of its success to the great partnerships that have been formed with various community-based organizations.

Non-profit organization at SFSU headed by Drew McAdams, to provide leadership training on the Ft.Miley Adventure Ropes Course. GetOutAndLearn students facilitate courses weekly at Ft. Miley throughout the semester. Many students have the opportunity to acquire summer employment with PLI. In fact, about 30% of the Spring 2006 class were employed with PLI. Recent graduates continue to work with PLI and have become TL's and course leaders facilitating leadership training for their peers.

 

Founded by the late Ryan Jones, this partnership with GetOutAndLearn students gives access to GGNRA parklands such as Milagra Ridge, Mori Point, Wolfback Ridge and others. SSP's mission is to bring people together to protect ecologically sensitive areas within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. In this program, student participants work to restore the ecological integrity of selected sites and to protects rare and endangered species. Paid summer internships are available through the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy Site Stewardship Program. GetOutAndLearn students are encouraged to pursue this job opportunity.

 

Students learn traditional wooden boat building techniques through the process of building a small craft from start to finish - carrying out the measuring, cutting, assembly, and shaping of the boat and sail. The teaching methods emphasize independence and initiative. Sailing instruction and maritime history lessons round out the program. Past projects include a twelve-foot "Pelican" pram, a lapstrake "Susan Skiff" dory, and a flatbottom "Goat Island Skiff" sailboat. Please check out the most recent pictures of this project.

 

GetOutAndLearn is a Pinnacle Partner Agency with OB. Outward Bound is a non-profit educational organization that serves people of all ages and backgrounds through active learning expeditions that inspire character development, self-discovery and service both in and out of the classroom. Outward Bound delivers wilderness-based programs to participants across the country and focuses its outreach on underserved youth. Customized courses provide curricula developed for struggling teens, groups with specific health, social or educational needs and business and professional organizations. GetOutAndLearn can send two students each summer on an Outward Bound course as a Pinnacle Scholarship recipient. These courses are funded entirely through scholarship.

 

The Tall Ship Education Academy provides voyages of exploration and self discovery that empower teenage girls to reach their full potential. The academically rigorous sailing voyages challenge a diverse group of girls to build personal responsibility, interdependence and global awareness. They return home with the tools to lead productive lives and build strong communities.GetOutAndLearn encourages and loves it when its young women participate in this program!
