GetOutAndLearn is an all day self-contained classroom, providing consistent teacher involvement coupled with greater student accountability, both academically and personally.

The program has five experiential learning phases:

  1. Orientation and Self-Discovery
  2. Wilderness Leadership
  3. Community Leadership
  4. Service Learning
  5. Career Exploration

Core academic interventions in reading and math create the foundation of the program and are interwoven into all classroom and off-campus experiences. Students in GetOutAndLearn earn core graduation requirement credits that help to propel them towards graduation and keep them from falling further behind. All experiential activities, whether on the ropes course, out in the wilderness, building a wooden boat using traditional methods or in the community are tied to academic assignments integrated into the day.

Our community becomes the classroom where students make the connection between real-world activities and their need to master reading, writing, mathematics, science, and history. By the end of the semester, Get Out and Learn students will be prepared to graduate, move on to other programs or re-enter the regular education system.

The physical and emotional well being of our students is of utmost importance to the GetOutAndLearn staff. Administrative and field-based risk management permeates all aspects of our program and is addressed at all levels of the organization.
